Giovanni Paolo II
St Bruno
On the 6th October 1101, burning with divine love, Bruno departed from the shifting shadows of temporal life to definitively reach eternal pastures (see Letter to Raul, no. 13). The brethren of the hermitage of Santa Maria della Torre, in Calabria, to whom he had shown so much sentiment, could not have any doubt about the fact that this Dies natalis (Day of birth) had started off a singular spiritual adventure which up to this very day produces abundant fruit for the Church and for the world.

St Bruno
"Certainly, my dearest friend, you do remember how one day being together, myself, youself and Fulcuiusl the cross-eyed, in the small garden next to Adam's house, where I was then lodging, we had spoken for some time, it seems to me, of the false pleasures and of the passing riches of this world and also of the happiness of everlasting glory. So that, burning with divine love, we promised, vowed and decided to leave as soon as possible the fleeting of the century and get hold of that which is eternal, besides also receiving the monastic garb..."

Witness
"You are being given, oh faithful, devout pilgrims and townsmen of this great saint Bruno, a message of prayer and faith ... even when you find yourself in the darkest of nights, there remains in the depth of one's heart a hidden wish, that something which makes one look up to heaven.
"It is exactly here that Bruno shows himself to be much nearer to honest and simple faith, often suffered by the people of Calabria and this accordingly pushes us forward not to abandon or forget prayer: not that occasional prayer which seeks and begs extraordinary interventions by God, but that which accompanies the passing of whole days and does not let God just be a nice word, or an abstract idea, or at the most a passing feeling, but that He be a presence of love and of light which gives sense and interprets all colours, bright and dark, like those out of which our life is woven.
"Your prayer, your religiosity are important both for yourselves and for the Church in Italy and in the whole world. My dearest friends and devotees of St Bruno, you have a great message to bear."

Card. C.M. Martini
